Ban Jelačić Square (Zagreb)

Ban Jelačić Square
Ban Jelačić Square is the central square of the city of Zagreb, Croatia, named after ban Josip Jelačić. The official name is Trg bana Jelačića. It is colloquially referred to as Jelačić plac (derived from Platz, the German word for square or plaza) or simply Trg ("the square"). It is located below Zagreb's old city cores Gradec and Kaptol and directly south of the Dolac Market. It is the center of the Zagreb Downtown pedestrian zone. The square has existed since the 17th century. Its first name was Harmica. It features buildings belonging to different architectural styles ranging from classicism, secession and modernism. The oldest standing building is situated at 18 Ban Jelačić Square. It was built in 1827. The square features a large statue of ban Josip Jelačić on a horse, created by Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn. Jelačić Square is the most common meeting place for people in Zagreb. Being a part of the pedestrian zone, it is inaccessible by car, but it is the main hub for trams.

Vibrant square

Vibrant and active, with people of all ages and ethnicities. Open air market, shops, restaurants...It is unbelievably clean and well organized with small tents around it where you can purchase good mulled wine and tasty sausages at very cheap price.

Pleasant square

The square itself is pleasant, though if you look like a tourist or you stand around too much you're likely to have a man or woman come up and talk about their animal shelter and as for 20-40 kuna for a picture of an animal or a magnet. Whether or not they're actually working for a charity, I don't know, but constantly being asked for money is a bit irritating.

Beautiful around Christmas

Busy, busy square - beautiful in the day and especially at night - with all the xmas lights. Love the 2015 lights, in readiness for the new year. there were performances and a xmas market offering food and crafts at good prices. Definitely recommend Zagreb and all it has to offer.
