Mirogoj Cemetery (Zagreb)
The Mirogoj Park Cemetery is among the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. Mirogoj is not only the final resting place for the deceased, but also a wonderful park and an outdoor art gallery. The cemetery was created in 1876 on a plot of land owned by the linguist Ljudevit Gaj. Famous architect Herman Bollé designed the cemetery with its monumental composition, a 500 meters long line of neo-renaissance arcades with 20 domes. The construction of the arcades, the cupolas, and the church in the entryway was begun in 1879. Work was finished in 1929. The cemetery inters members of all religious groups: Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, Protestant, Latter Day Saints and irreligious graves can all be found. In the arcades are the last resting places of many famous Croatians.
