Prokurative (Split)

Prokurative
Prokurative or as they are officially called, Republic Square resemble the Venice St. Marks Square. The square is only open on the south side, providing a beautiful view of the harbour and the Riva (waterfront). The square has long been established as an excellent stage for cultural events, especially the pop music festival, and the local bars and restaurants made it a popular venue for the citizens of Split.

Beautiful architecture

Happened to run across this because I stayed in the Bellvue hotel which is right next to the Prokurative. Very lively square or so it sounded at night. Beautiful architecture too..

One of the most recognisable landmarks in Split

The Prokurative or as most locals refer to it Trg Republike (Republic square) is I feel one of the most recognisable landmarks in Split. This area was originally a park that was devised by the French Marshal Marmount during the French occupation. In the 19th century, the park was ripped up and the Prokurative was built to resemble a venetian square. You would think that the people of Split would be sick of having things look Venetian after the 500 years the Venetians had occupied Split and Dalmatia. Often quiet, the square has a number of restaurants (Spalatin is superb), the colour of the Prokurative enables the tourist to have a unique photographic opportunity due to the colours of the square (so different from the rest of the old town and the palace.
