Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters (Zagreb)

Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters
The Academy's Gallery of Old Masters was named after its founder, Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the bishop of Đakovo. Over the years, the bishop had collected numerous works of art, from the fifteenth century Italian Primitives to contemporary Croatian painters of his own time. In 1868, he decided to donate his collection to the Croatian people, entrusting it to the Academy. He ensured the building of a neo-Renaissance palace in Zagreb, designed by the Viennese architect Franz Schmidt, so that the works of art could be adequately presented to the public.

A nice way to spend an hour in Zagreb

This gallery is located across from Zrinjevac park right in the centre of Zagreb. The interior of the building itself is beautiful and worth a view. The majority of the art showcases images of the Baby Jesus with Mother, although further along in the gallery there are other pieces, some related to christianity, some to do with mythology, as well as a smattering of miscellanous pieces. It's a delightful way to spend 1 hour in Zagreb if you have the spare time.
